As peรงas expostas no Museu do Abade de Baรงal sรฃo disso exemplo.

In the Rhineland, between the 16th and 17th centuries, the Bartmannkrรผge appeared, or bearded man jugs. They were later exported across the continent and came to be buried beneath the thresholds of houses in England, with objects inside, in the belief that this would ward off harm.
Around 1760, in Staffordshire, the idea returns in another form: no longer a bearded face, but a full-length figure. So arrive the Toby jugs, generally showing a seated character in a tricorn hat with a mug in hand, designed for use at the table.

The model spread across Europe, reaching the Portuguese faience centres and being taken up in the 19th century by the factories of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. The pieces on display at the Museu do Abade de Baรงal are an example of this.
