Made and decorated with a knife by the region's shepherds during their spare hours from herding, they were then used by women for spinning, above all through the long winter evenings. Many were also gifts, intended for the "patroa", the "conversada" or the "prometida" (the mistress of the house, the sweetheart, the betrothed).
It is on the handle that the so-called knife work reveals itself in greatest detail. Precise strokes in the wood bring forth hearts and crosses, human figures, knights, flowers and animals such as roosters, serpents or peacocks. At the top, the distaff head that held the wool to be spun rises into a lace-like tower of windows and arcades, recalling that of a castle or a cathedral.
Each one is therefore different.
