The environment in the region of Trás-os-Montes

It is fitting to talk about land in this corner of the country. Everything sprouts from it, thus assuring it of a favoured status in Portugal.
This is a region of "miracle" waters which surge naturally and spontaneously from each fold of a sheet that is stirred by the mysteries of the subsoil. These mineral waters come up from the crust: some are cold, others are carbonated; there are still those that climb up more quickly into Mother Nature's arms, which are hidden by granitic coverings that caress everything. At times, they keep still in age-old caves, thus forming sheets of water. On other occasions, they decide to travel along uneven stretches, in small protruding gorges or in the splendour of wide-open pastures.
The rivers sometimes flow slowly in prolonged "Kisses" with the banks that court them; at other times, they recklessly unleash themselves in waterfalls of unsurpassed beauty. And life; wheter animal or plant, that results from them is a breathtaking splendour in whatever direction you head. Whether on the ground, in the currents or in the blue of the sky, a thousand species make their free presence felt more and more every year; this creative phenomenon is obvious in oxygenated and coloured parts of every season.
The nature parks, from Peneda-Gerês to Montesinho, by way of the Alvão and the superb Marão with spectacular precipices and cliffs, are reserves chosen by men in their travels throughout the world. These parks multiply in this region, shaken by the proverbial nine months when the atmosphere gets ruffled in cold, humid blandishments, or by the other three, hot and burning.
